Upcycling Found Manufactured Components
The sustainable qualities of Fragments of Waves lie in its extensive use of reclaimed materials and upcycling of found objects. Both the recording and playback devices are constructed from repurposed elements such as steel, wood, ropes, magnetic tape, and cables, minimizing the need for newly manufactured components. By incorporating discarded and salvaged items, the project not only reduces waste but also gives new life to materials that would otherwise be left unused. This approach aligns with principles of sustainability by conserving resources and emphasizing creative reuse, while simultaneously producing a poetic, functional artwork.
This mechanical instrument captures the sensitive traces of immaterial phenomena: the movement of the waves. Memorized electromechanically on magnetic tape, these fluctuations are then interpreted and recited phonetically by a second playback device. Shaped by the wind, currents, or boats, the recorded data always contain an element of the unexpected or the incalculable. As witnesses to an unstable landscape, these machines act autonomously; they probe their fluctuating environment and return to us poetic sound and visual fragments.
