Gold ink
The sustainability of this material comes from it being created with common kitchen ingredients. Bicarbonate, or baking soda, is mixed with water which produces an alkaline, transparent solution. Baking soda is non-toxic and generally safe to dispose of in smaller quantities.
A liquid containing alcohol is then mixed with a coloured pigment (the material example uses turmeric powder). Alcohol is also non-toxic in small quantities and generally safe to dispose of. The pigment is organic and bio-degradable.
When applied to paper, the transparent solution is turned bright red by the alcohol solution and reveals hidden messages. The aim of the technique is to showcase inventiveness and creativity in making your own paints, as well as showcasing the chemical reactions of painting.
