Pomegranate dye

The sustainability of this material comes from the non-toxic and organic dyeing method as well as the creative reuse of components. Many kitchen leftovers contain strong colour dyes. In this tutorial pomegranate shells are used. Other examples include onion shells, beetroot shavings and porcini mushroom pores. These leftovers are compostable and would have been otherwise thrown away. The fabric was sourced from a second-hand shop, reducing the need for “virgin” materials.

The fabric is treated with bicarbonate or baking soda, which is safe to dispose of after use. By learning how to dye different types of fabrics using different types of dyes, the visual artist can be more versatile and self-sufficient when bringing their creative vision to life.
